Class News

K/1
K1 have had a very busy week this week celebrating both NAIDOC week as well as Remembrance Day. Each day we have been looking at Aboriginal dreamtime stories as well as creating Aboriginal artwork. For Remembrance Day K1 made some beautiful poppies and we talked about the significance of Remembrance Day.
In writing during the last two weeks, we have been working on a co-constructed writing piece where everyone has an input in writing the sentences. This week we have been reading the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and focused on using adjectives to make our writing sound more interesting. Each week we will be completing a piece of co-constructed writing. This will then be typed up and printed and each student will be able to illustrate their work. This will then be laminated and used in class for reading and fluency practise. It will also be sent home with students for them to practise with their parents and/or carers.

This week has really demonstrated what a wonderful bunch of kids we have at the school. The way that the students learnt their parts over night for our Remembrance Day service made me extremely proud. It really shows how far they have all come along with their reading this year. All of the students read with great reverence and they all participated in the service with great respect. Each student did a tremendous job on creating a poppy for the ceremony or creating a flag for our NAIDOC celebrations.
In English we have really been concentrating on quality writing. We have been using a technique called Draw, Talk & Write. This technique is getting the students to use their drawings as a talking point with their peers before they actually start to write. They discuss with their peers what they actually want to write about and get each others feedback before they start to write. It is then all about writing quality sentences using descriptive language rather than writing for quantity. Here are some examples from King Kong and Dreamtime stories:

This week has been a busy week for 4/5/6 as we celebrated NAIDOC week and participated in our school Remembrance Day ceremony. Students have done an exceptional job creating Aboriginal mosaic flags and poppies to represent these important events. Students also had the opportunity to leave a message of support online to help honour the Australian servicemen and servicewomen who have served our country. These were than posted to https://lestweforget.gov.au/#/ for everyone in our community to see.

In Math we have been focusing on Fractions and Decimals. Students have been working hard on their math goals and have demonstrated persistence in working through more challenging math problems. Alongside of our fractions and decimals unit, we have been focusing on our math fluency which is an important skill for students to master as this helps with more difficult math topics. Students are reminded to keep working on their times tables every night for at least 10mins. This will help further strengthen their confidence in this area.
4/5/6 has started using diaries to help with organisation skills. They are required to bring them home every night to get signed and bring them back the next day. Students write their homework daily in their diaries and are working on being more responsible and taking further ownership of their learning. Students can use this diary for outside events they may have as well. We have been talking a lot about organising our time wisely for homework task as this is an important skill to have. You can further support your child in this area at home by encouraging your child to be organised and to set aside a regular time for homework and checking your child's diary on a regular basis and sign weekly. Students earn homework awards that are also located in your child's diary. Thank you for your continued support.
